Best Careers:
How Do You Choose When Making a Career Change?

Choose the best careers for you when planning your career change. This is the wisest career change advice I can give you.

But how do you know which career choice are best for you? And what does the term "best" mean anyway?

Well, elsewhere in this site, we looked at the ten hottest careers (in terms of rate of growth, and overall number of jobs available). We also looked at some of the best paid careers that were also projected to be growing fast.

A couple of years ago, the Wall Street Journal published a report saying that these were the 10 best careers in the US:

  1. Biologist
  2. Actuary
  3. Financial planner
  4. Computer-systems analyst
  5. Accountant
  6. Software engineer
  7. Meteorologist
  8. Paralegal assistant
  9. Statistician
  10. Astronomer

And a book published by Amazon on the 100 Best Careers talks about bioscience careers as being a great choice for the future.

But on this page, we're not concerned so much with employment trends as we are with looking at what is best for you. You need to ask yourself, what are the best careers for me?

What Factors Should Be Considered When Choosing the Best Careers?

When it comes right down to it, only you can decide which careers are the best ones for you. I can give you career change advice, but the final decision must come from your heart and your mind.

But here are some questions you should try to answer when thinking about careers for a career change:

  • What kinds of job tasks and activities do I enjoy doing most? Here's where a career choice quiz can be really helpful. This kind of quiz can help you figure out how your preferences might relate to different career choices. It's kind of fun to explore yourself through these tools, and there are lots of free ones available. Click the link above to learn about a few.

  • What kinds of working conditions appeal to me? For example, do you enjoy working alone and independently or is it more fun to be part of a close-knit team? Or, do you like working outdoors more than sitting at a desk? Do you like jobs where you use your hands or your brains? You get the idea...

  • What kind of salary range appeals to you? This is an important issue, especially if you find that you are more motivated by money than the work itself. Be sure you know where your heart lies before choosing your career options.

  • How important is job security to you? This factor can make a big difference in both your choice of career and the industry in which you would work.

  • How about stress? Do you thrive on a constantly changing, fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment like advertising or emergency room nursing... or would you prefer a more stable, predictable type of work like factory production line or accounting?

  • What are my qualifications? And, of course, another important factor in your career decision is the simple truth of what you are qualified for... or prepared to qualify for through additional education, training, and/or certification. For example, you might think the career of brain surgeon sounds like just the thing for you, but if you're not a doctor and don't have the means and/or interest in going to school for the next decade to become a medical specialist, then brain surgeon is probably not the best career for you. Be realistic here.

So, those are just some of the factors you'll need to think about when making your decision about a direction for your career change.

Another way to research best careers is to do a search on Google. This is particularly effective if you want career change advice for a specific geographic or career area.

Use the search box below and search for something like, "best careers in arizona" OR "best careers in music" (and DO use the quotes for a targeted search).

Try it...
